Fulfilling Stories - Prepared (Traditional)

Series: Fulfilling Stories

In Kalas’ book, this parable is about preparedness: steady, intentional preparedness.  The idea is that one who makes a habit and discipline of keeping a stock of oil will not be found short when it counts.  He applies this to moments of crisis, and putting himself in the perspective of the oil dealer: (page 106) “I’m not suggesting that by going to church regularly and by maintaining a faithful devotional life a person wins brownie points with God.  But I do know by experience that when we keep buying oil week after week and year after year, we are more likely to have oil on hand when the valley is dark. It is as simple as that.”

As a nation, as a church within this nation, how do we keep a steady, disciplined supply of spiritual “oil” so that we are spiritually ready whenever crisis may come?  Even in the midst of an existing crisis, it’s never too late to learn the art of steady preparedness through spiritual discipline.  This can help us to understand the right priorities as a church and as a country.

This ties in with the parable of the servants waiting the Master’s return—be caught doing daily discipline well, rather than scrambling at the last minute trying to make things right.  Good advice for life, even better advice for God’s kingdom.
